In October 2001, we had:
9,411 visitors
220,841 pageviews
587,971 hits
Extrapolating for one year, we expect to have, at minimum:
112,932 visitors
2,650,092 pageviews
7,055,652 hits
Previous results. During the month of August 2001, we had:
7,727 visitors
129,395 pageviews
395,891 hits

The number of "impressions", as defined by Google and other Internet advertisers, it is something in between the number of "visitors" and the number of "pageviews". The number of "impressions" is higher than the number of "visitors", because a "visitor" may try several searches within minutes, for slightly different words, and therefore being counted as several "impressions".

In the most conservative scenario, we will consider our number of "visitors", equivalent with the number of "impressions". Therefore, our estimated number of "impressions" for one year will be at minimum: 112,932. We are reasonable assuming that most, if not all "visitors", will be able to see all ads that are placed on the top frames on our website, frames visible all the time we have a visitor. For the same number of "impressions", Google will charge: US$ 1,355. At this time, with our most expensive option, it will cost you only US$ 578, less than half the price. Even lower if you qualify for the 50% discount. Not mentioning that our banner is much bigger, may be animated, and therefore more likely to draw attention. Also the visitors to our website are better "qualified". They already know what they are looking for, and they are much more likely to pay attention to ads on a professional, dedicated site. On a "general purpose" website, such as a search engine, most visitors looking for professional information learned and developed "skills" to ignore the ads. Most do not "see" the ads or do not trust them! This is the explanation for a very law "clickthrough" rate. Google is claming a 5 times higher "clickthrough" rate than the industry standard. And yet, on an ad campaign on Google, with 25 very specific keywords, such as "power supply design", "switch mode power supply", "inductor design", the clickthrough rate was 1.98%. Imagine the clickthrough rate on other search engines.

About using Google to compare our advertising options. Do not take us wrong. Google, by any study today, is THE most important search engine. On all our studies, using websites with different content, such as power supplies manufacturers, consultants, lawyers, Google outperformed 2 to 1 the next competitor, in terms of number of referrals !

Also, here are our suggestions for marketeers, looking to advertise products and services related with power supplies/power electronics. These suggestions are in order of importance, in our opinion:
- 1) If you are selling ATX power supplies or similar low price, consumer products, we suggest that you let the selling channel, such as Fry's Electronics or Radio Shack to handle all your advertising campaign. They know what they are doing, and their ads are far more efficient and targeting the right people.
- 2) Advertise in a dedicated power electronics magazines, such as "PCIM".
- 3) Advertise on few general EE magazines, such as "EE Times" and "EDN".
- 4) Advertise on Google search engine.
- 5) Advertise on AltaVista, a still decent search engine at this time.
- 6) Pay to be included in Yahoo! directory.
- 7) Advertise on professional sites, like ours, dedicated to a narrow subject.
- 8) Advertise on still important, at this time, search engines such as Excite, MSN, Lycos, AOL.
- 9) Forget about the rest.

And now, the best kept secret of all: the most number of customers (those that will actually buy and pay for your products and services), you will get by using targeted mail/e-mails ! Try not to abuse the system. Do not send to often e-mails, and when you do, try to offer some information for which the recipient will be thankful, regardless or buying or not. Respect a possible request to stop sending e-mails.

Notes:
1- "Visitor", defined by Quantified Systems = A series of hits from any particular IP address. If any two hits are separated by 30 minutes or more, two visitors are counted.
2- "PageViews", defined by Quantified Systems = A request for a display-able page, such as "index.html" or "products.htm". An image is not a Pageview. "Pageviews" represents an actual, hard number.
3- "Hits", defined by Quantified Systems = A hit is merely a request to the server for a file. This means that one HTML page can, if it has several images, account for many hits.
4- "Impression", defined by Google = Each time Google shows a search results page with your ad, it counts as one impression for your ad.
